Room 6 & 7's Trip to the Supermarket
On Monday September 21st, the Senior Syndicate went to Pak n Save Glen Innes. Rooms 6 & 7 went together. They learnt to read labels on packet food. They had to make comparisons on every day foods and occasional foods. This was part of the Heart Foundation Food For Thought Programme. At the end of our trip the class got a $60 food voucher that would be put towards a healthy shared lunch. It was a fantastic day out and it provided lots of valuable learning.
Our Amazing Masks
Today we had a special assembly which focused on sharing our learning that we made from Electives. The mask making group showed their finished masks to the rest of the senior syndicate.
They have done an amazing job. Mr Johnston made the frames for us to paint and cut out the mounting blocks. Miss Paton did the initial mask making by putting wet plaster bandages onto our faces. After we painted the masks she mounted our masks onto the frames and varnished our masks.
There will be more masks completed in the weeks to come. Check these amazing masks out.

Should we change the New Zealand Flag? By Joel
Body of text
| |
Introduction
State what you are arguing about
State your opinion
For or Against
|
A flag is something that waves on a pole. It represents a country and identity. Every flag has a meaning. The pattern and design on the flag may represent a culture. Our argument is about changing the New Zealand flag. We are for changing the New Zealand flag.
|
Reason 1
Cultures
Supportive details
|
We think that the New Zealand flag should be a Maori pattern to show the culture and history of our country.
Maori people lived in New Zealand longer than the English people. New Zealand should have a flag that represents all cultures especially Maori and English.
|
Reason 2
Symbols
Supportive details
|
We don’t like the current New Zealand flag because
it's too dark and too bright.
I don’t know what the Union Jack means it has nothing to do with our country. The Union Jack is a British symbol. We need to have more New Zealand symbols on our flag.
|
Reason 3
Patterns and Voting
Supportive details
|
We think that the New Zealand flag should be a koru pattern. Our flag should be a red background with a green koru.
If we have a koru on the New Zealand flag then it will
be much better.
|
Conclusion
|
I’m for changing the flag because we need a change.
The current flag is out of date and needs a makeover. The new flag needs to represent our culture and symbols that make New Zealand a great country.

Should Panmure Bridge School have a Swimming Pool? By Chavda
Should we have an indoor swimming pool at Panmure Bridge School?
| |
Introduction
State what you are arguing about
State your opinion
For or Against
|
I am for having a swimming pool because lots of kids can learn how to swim. Kids should not drown and they can be healthy if they learnt how to swim.
|
Reason 1
safety.
Supportive details
|
It is good to know what to do in the water.
If you are too little then you have to wear a life jacket but if you don’t then you will drown in the swimming pool. You might be saved at the hospital. So learning to swim is very important.
|
Reason 2
Exercise
Supportive details
|
When you go swimming it exercises your body. When you swim it makes your body fit. Swimming makes you bones strong.
|
Reason 3
Learning.
Supportive details
|
You can do fun things with your friends in the swimming pool and you can learn how to do strokes and techniques. Some of your family members can help you learn how to swim and if you do know how to swim then you can teach each other.
|
Conclusion
|
I think we should have a pool at Panmure Bridge School because students can learn to swim and get fit. Later on in life they can save lives of other people if they learnt how to swim.
|
This is my argument scaffold. I have been learning to come up with reasons in my writing.
Caesar's argument on: Should we let people into the forest?
This is my argument on Should we let people into the forest? I am against people going into the forest.
Should we let people into the forest?
| |
Introduction
State what you are arguing about
State your opinion
For or Against
|
My argument is about people going into the forest. A forest has lots of trees and they grow on mountains and in valleys. I am against people going into the forest because something dangerous might happen to them. They can leave behind lots of rubbish. When they protect the forest, people don’t look after it because they leave rubbish and things lying round.
|
Reason 1
Safety
Supportive details
|
If we let people into the forest they could get lost, parents would be worried and they would call the police. The police are very busy arresting people and taking guns off people. The police take bad people to the police station and stop what they are doing. If people got lost in the forest, the police would have to go and rescue some people. If people were in the forest too long they would start to get sick and they might die because they didn’t have any food, drink or medicine.
|
Reason 2
Camping
Supportive details
|
If people bring some snacks like a muesli bar, chocolate, chips and cookies into the forest they would leave rubbish lying around in the forest. Possums and rats can eat rubbish that have been left on the ground and that would bring lots more of them. Rats are not good because they might give rabies to the other animals. If the rubbish is left on the ground sometimes it can cause a fire. If someone chucks a bottle on dry grass it can cause fire and the fire could go all over the place. If it goes all over the place, it is putting people’s lives and animal’s lives at risk. Cigarette smoking in forests can create fires especially if the ground is dry. I feel that people should be banned from going into our beautiful New Zealand forests.
|
Reason 3
Health
Supportive details
|
If we go into the forest sometimes there could be wild animals. Animals come out at night while you are sleeping. The animals are wild pigs, deers wild boars, rats and possums. Mosquitoes also come out and bite people in the forest. This can cause problems, if you are allergic to mosquito bites.
|
Conclusion:
|
I think that people should not go into the forest as they can get lost, leave rubbish lying round and can create fires through leaving glass bottles and smoking cigarettes in the forest. We need to keep our forests clean, green and beautiful, so banning people will stop any damage humans cause.

Should Panmure Bridge School have a Swimming Pool? By Aung Naing and Najib
This is my argument on: Should Panmure Bridge School have a Swimming Pool? Me and Najib worked as a team to complete this piece of writing.
Body of text
| |
Introduction
State what you are arguing about
State your opinion
For or Against
|
My Argument is should we have a swimming pool at Panmure Bridge School. We are for having a swimming pool at Panmure bridge School because it provides water skills for the kids.
|
Reason 1
learning
Supportive details
|
We like swimming pool because you can learn how to swim and you can be good at swimming. In the Swimming pool you can have a racing competition with your friends in the Swimming pool,
and you could also play in the swimming pool. Swimming is good for your body to get lots of exercise. I like swimming because you can learn better.
|
Reason 2
Playing with friends
Supportive details
|
In the holidays some swimming pools might be closed. Instead of waiting for the pools to open you could come to the Panmure Bridge School swimming pool and have fun playing with your friends and your family.
|
Reason 3
family
Supportive details
|
If you don’t spend time with your family you can go to the Panmure Bridge School swimming pool and swim together. Your family will have a great time if you come and swim during the holidays at Panmure Bridge School pool.
|
Conclusion
|
Therefore I think there should be a swimming pool at Panmure Bridge School because it helps us to learn to swim. Also you can have games with your friends.

Should we have Homework? By Tai
This is my argument on should we have homework. I am for having homework.
Body of text
| |
Introduction
State what you are arguing about
State your opinion
For or Against
|
Homework is an after school task for students. It may consist of maths, reading, spelling, writing and inquiry tasks.
My Argument is should we have homework? I am for having homework because it makes you smarter by the minute. It helps you to learn lots of things you don’t know.
|
Reason 1
Smart
Supportive details
tests
|
My first reason is you get smarter by doing your homework every day. You can get smarter by answering timetables (iKan test questions within seconds). Homework also helps you read much faster. If you’ve got your answers wrong you might have to do it again because you didn’t do it properly or weren’t paying attention.
|
Reason 2
stops you from learning at home if you didn’t have any homework
Could get boring if I watched TV all the time
Supportive details
|
Sometimes television can be a real distraction for students up and down the country.
If you watch a TV program it might be boring and it would stop you from learning and doing your homework.
TV wastes your time from doing your homework.
TV makes you lazy and fat, also you would stay in bed all day. If you do homework you're brain will get more exercise and you will learn something new.
At home I go to my auntys house to do my maths on her laptop computer.
|
Reason 3
People can help you
Supportive details
Mum
Dad
Friends
Parents can learn and take an interest in your school work. Parents understand what you are learning about
|
Homework brings families together.
If you need help you could ask any of your family members or friends to come and help you. Parents might learn something from your homework as well. Parents will learn what you're learning about in class, and they might do your homework with you and help you if you need help.
Also parents could think your homework is interesting and they would help you each day.
Homework brings teamwork together and you can solve problems together with your friends. It allows you to talk together and to share ideas.
|
Therefore I think there should have homework for all students so they can be prepared for tests every day and that parents can assist their children the best way they can with their child’s learning.

Should we change the New Zealand Flag? By Nazanin
This is my Argument on whether we should change the New Zealand Flag.
Body of text
| |
Introduction
State what you are arguing about
State your opinion
For or Against
|
The New Zealand flag has been waving proudly since 1902. At the moment there is a referendum on whether we should change the New Zealand flag?
I am against changing the New Zealand Flag.
|
Reason 1
Identify
Supportive details
|
The flag has been through world war 1 and 2. The soldiers would not want to wave the new flag. The flag has been with the soldiers since 1902. The New Zealand flag is a part of our culture
|
Reason 2
Money
Supportive details
|
To have this referendum it is costing 26 million dollars to change the New Zealand flag. A lot of money is being wasted to change the New Zealand flag. We could build new schools and hospitals with 26 million dollars.
|
Reason 3
Soldiers
Supportive details
|
The Union jack flag have been flying with the soldiers for a long time. The flag has been flying with the soldiers since 1902. The union jack represents us as a commonwealth country. Our head of state is queen Elizabeth the 2nd and we belong to the monarchy. Do we really want to have a president ruling this country or do we want the queen as our head of state?
|
Conclusion
|
As I have argued today I think we should not change the flag. The current flag has represented New Zealand in wars and in sporting tournaments. It has had a long history. The New Zealand flag gives us the sense of belonging to the Commonwealth. It has enabled us to bond and have friendships with other countries. Money could be better spent on schools, hospitals, buildings, houses for poor people and roading. So why should we change a perfectly good flag?
